Emily is an Associate Solicitor in the Abuse team at Bolt Burdon Kemp.
Emily specialises in representing clients in claims for compensation arising from sexual, physical and emotional abuse brought against organisations including the Scout Association, the church, local authorities and the Ministry of Defence. Emily also acts in claims against individual abusers as well as acting in claims against social services in failure to remove cases.
Emily has a particular interest in supporting victims of image-based sexual abuse (commonly referred to as ‘revenge porn’) to bring claims for compensation against their abusers and organisations who failed them.
Emily is passionate about ensuring that victims of abuse are fully compensated via the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). She acts in a number of cases challenging the CICA’s decisions in relation to children who are victims of abuse who the CICA have said ‘consented’ to what happened to them, as well as where it has been decided that their claim should not be eligible within the scheme.
Emily is a trustee of Survivors UK. Survivors UK is a charity which helps men who have been sexually abused and raises awareness of their needs. It provides specialist support including individual and group counselling, therapy and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs).
She is a member of Centre for Women’s Justice’s Legal Reference Panel.
Emily is a volunteer at the Queen Mary’s Legal Advice Centre, for their SPITE clinic (Sharing and Publishing Intimate Images to Embarrass), supervising students to give advice on image-based sexual abuse (often referred to as ‘revenge porn’).
In addition, she is a committee member of the Law Society’s Access to Justice Committee and of Young Legal Aid Lawyers; an organisation which campaigns for a sustainable legal aid system, access to justice and social mobility within the legal profession.
Before joining Bolt Burdon Kemp, Emily achieved a first class honours degree in Education at Birmingham City University, completed her Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies at University of Birmingham and obtained a distinction in her Legal Practice Course at the College of Law.
